What is Hypnosis?

 What is the Subconscious Mind?

The subconscious mind is responsible for automated emotional and behavioural responses, both positive and negative, which have been programmed by life experiences. For example, once proficient at driving you don’t have to consciously think how do I drive this car? Your subconscious mind kicks in and off you go. The same can happen for behaviours and beliefs that are not in your best interest. Examples would include:

Myth Busting

There are plenty of myths about hypnosis which sadly puts some people off using hypnosis as a tool to make positive changes in their lives. Here are some popular myths about hypnosis and the explanations behind them.

* I can’t be hypnotized – Hypnosis is a natural state that everyone experiences many times throughout the day. If you are unwilling to be guided into a hypnotic state then you won’t experience it… it’s not that you can’t. If you’re interested in something and it’s something that you want, generally you’re open to its effects. The same is true with hypnosis. If you want it to work and you allow yourself to participate you will be able to experience the benefits of hypnosis.

* Only the weak minded or gullible are easily hypnotized – Those that are able to concentrate well and that have a creative imagination are able to experience the hypnotic state the easiest. Everyone is susceptible to suggestion. For example, ask yourself if you’ve ever bought something because of an advertisement. If someone is offering you something that is useful that you would benefit from, it would be really unwise to work against it.

* When hypnotized, you can be made to say or do something against your will. – This is an old idea that was introduced by really old B-grade movies. While hypnotized you are still completely aware of everything that is happening around you. Although you are in a state of heightened suggestion, you maintain your personal values, beliefs and morals and can not be made to do anything that would be against them. In fact, such suggestions would cause you to instantly “pop out” of the hypnotic state.

* You can get stuck in hypnosis and be unable to wake up. – It is literally impossible to get “stuck” in hypnosis. Hypnosis is a natural state for the human mind and we can experience it several times per day. The worst that could happen is that you would be so relaxed that you would drift into natural sleep and would awaken shortly thereafter. In fact, hypnosis is actually used by many people to help them achieve sleep if their mind is too ‘busy’. The subconscious mind would be given the instruction to sleep a regular sleep interval. There is no way to sleep beyond what is natural for your body no matter what the suggestion is.
